Brandy Dominelli and her husband, Sandro, are mainstays of the Edmonton music scene. Brandy worked as a coordinator for the Edmonton Jazz Festival, while Sandro is a Juno-nominated jazz drummer. When the couple started their family in 2012, they decided to open their own music school. Drawing from their backgrounds, Brandy handles much of the administration, while Sandro and his fellow music teachers handle the musical instruction.
Having a small child at home was a source of inspiration for the new parents; while Dominelli School of Music offers classes for anyone who wants to learn music, they’ve taken a special interest in early musical development. Brandy and her team of teachers have created two different programs designed to expose kids as young as a year old to music and art.
One of these programs is their own early childhood music program, Rock Kids. It's for kids between the ages of one and five. The curriculum focuses on musical development through rock and pop music, while playing ukulele, piano, drums and more. “Kids in the program actually get to handle real instruments and the first song they learn is ‘We Will Rock You,’” says Brandy. “We want them to learn cool music – and have fun with it – and play songs that their parents get excited about.”
