The Needle Vinyl Tavern has a stylishly familiar feel about it: A wall of neatly collaged, black and white portraits hang row after row. They feature so many of the great musicians, that’s it’s hard to keep track of everyone – from Billie Holliday and Bob Dylan to David Bowie and Bessie Smith and all those in-between and beyond their time – and opposite of them all, on a brick wall above the main bar, covers of vinyl records sit in tight formation from hanging shelves, as if daring you to reach out and let them loose, to examine them all.
Wesley Littke, The Needle Vinyl Tavern’s manager, dreams that one day, when people hear the words Edmonton and music that they’ll think of The Needle Vinyl Tavern, in the same way that they think of the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver’s music scene.
That dream is very possible; music talent in Edmonton is plentiful. “Edmonton, as I’ve come to learn, just within the city limits, has at least 3,000 – ranging from garage to national — bands,” says Wesley. There are even well-known Canadian musicians, like Bif Naked, planning to perform at The Needle Vinyl Tavern and musicians from abroad – like the London, U.K. duo, Gorgon City. Overall, the acts who perform here, in many ways, reflect an image of the eclectic and varied mix of musicians and memorabilia displayed on its walls.
