Welcome to Barks Pedorthics. We are a health care team that provides custom orthotics and footwear modifications to Brant, Oxford, and Middlesex counties; the region of Waterloo; and the Hamilton-Wentworth area.

If you have foot pain you don’t need to travel far, or at all, we’ll come to you! Our certified pedorthist will meet you at your home to conduct a lower limb assessment and/or dispense your orthotics. No need to travel into the city, book time off work, or schedule a meeting in another town to get the care you need— we will bring the clinic, and the lab, to you.

What is a Pedorthist?

Canadian Certified Pedorthists are orthotic and orthopaedic footwear experts trained in postural analysis, movement patterns, and musculoskeletal examination. More specifically, they focus on the assessment of lower limb anatomy, muscle and joint function, as well as the interaction of the foot and lower limb with the rest of the body. With specialized education and training in foot orthoses and footwear, Canadian Certified Pedorthists help to alleviate pain, abnormalities, and debilitating conditions of the lower limbs and feet.

Pedorthics is a rather funny word that comes from two roots:

  • ped - referring to the foot

  • orthotics - the field of healthcare that uses external devices to improve the function of the body

Thus a pedorthist is a lower limb specialist that often works with shoes and shoe inserts (orthotics). Think of them like a mechanic for your legs— if you are experiencing lower extremity pain, fatigue or any other issues a visit from a pedorthist can help find out what is going and how to fix it.

Pedorthists have both an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology or a related field as well as a post-graduate diploma in Pedorthics. The profession is regulated by the College of Pedorthics of Canada.
